Snow Report - Verbier
Some Snow in August !
Yep, last night above 2000m there was a dusting of snow, leaving a great green and white backdrop to Verbier. Lets hope it’s a good omen for the season to come.
Where is Verbier?????????
Conditions on the mountain are thick powder everywhere. Most of the runs are open but people are sticking to the lower slopes where trees make it easier to find your way around. Morning skiing is providing the best conditions – in the afternoon watch out for scraped off areas of ice in-between the piles of powder.
Also beware of large icy bumps hidden by the new snow. A BASI trainer (who will remain nameless) reportedly came to grief a number of times on attempting Fontaneys. As you can see the ES team are enjoying the weather on their all week training session.
The final run down to Medran is still shut after the melting snow last week made it almost bare. But an alternative route for the last section is available which brings you out at the top of the Medran car park.
The next few days are forecast to continue with more snow and low visibility. With on mountain temperatures of around -9C made colder by some gusting winds. Wrap up warm – winter has arrived at last.
Two days of snow in Verbier
After a busy, sunny holiday week the clouds rolled in yesterday and more snow arrived in Verbier. A few centimetres of fresh snow yesterday was followed by several heavy snowfalls during today. Temperatures at resort level were above zero causing some sticky snow below Ruinettes and particularly at the beginners slopes of Les Esserts.
The top of the main mountain remained shut the whole day due to gusting wind speeds of up to 80km/hr. High winds also delayed the opening of the Savoleyres gondola until lunchtime.
News of the Week!!! The La Tzoumaz sledge run is now open. The run goes from the top to the bottom of the gondola on the La Tzoumaz side of the mountain – 10km of pure excitement – remember your goggles and helmet!!
Forecasts for the next couple of days are for more clouds and snow. Temperatures will be dropping slightly as will the wind speeds so expect more of the upper slopes to be available with some fresh powder snow.
Sunny and clear days
Sunshine and blue skies welcomed crowds to Verbier this weekend. With temperatures remaining below zero the snow quality is still very good – packed powder on the pistes and chopped up soft stuff off-piste. Col des Gentaines is once again open although watch out for a small rocky patch halfway down. Tortin is also open and said to be very good at present with not too many moguls. The glacier drag lifts and itineraries Vallon D Arbi and Col des Mines remain closed for the present. However, rock coverage off-piste is generally much better following the recent snowfall this week.
At Savoleyres the snow conditions are still very good and the slopes are much less crowded. The only icy run is the red down to La Tzoumaz all the other runs are pisted powder and there is still some powder available off piste on the La Tzoumaz side of the mountain and under the Tailley lift.
The forecast for the next few days into February is for more sun and temperatures of around 4 C during the day and -5C overnight. Snow cannons are now back hard at work to maintain the snow conditions as we roll up towards the half term holiday.
Quieter slopes in Verbier
The slopes of Verbier are now much quieter with many of the New Year crowd having departed. The snow on the main mountain is great with some small patches of powder still to be found.
The famous Tortin itinerary run is now open although reported to be somewhat rocky at the entrance – helmets are advised.
The blue airport run over at Savoleyres is now open and gives great skiing for those coming up from the beginners slopes at Les Esserts. All the lifts are now working at Savoleyres including the T bar at the front of the mountain. Most runs are also open although the red from the top down to La Tzoumaz is rough in places.
All the lifts at Bruson are now open including the luge track. This area often has hidden powder due to the north facing aspect and much lower traffic.
Sunny weather over the last couple of days has caused a number of mini avalanches off-piste and the signs for closed areas such as Col des Mines and Vallon D’Arby should be respected
The winds that were strong earlier in the week have died down and temperatures have risen slightly giving some rain at resort level although new snow up higher. Today is cloudy with a small amount of snow expected tomorrow.
